Avatar is a 2009 American 3D science-fiction film directed and co-produced by James Cameron, and starring Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang. Through Cameron’s direction and Worthington’s performance, it tells the story of a paraplegic Marine sent to the moon Pandora in 2108. He becomes involved in a conflict between humans and the tropical humanoid species called “avatars”. The film’s popularity has led to multiple sequels, resulting in a franchise comprising four released films. The Way of Water is a sequel but does share some themes with Avatar such as technology, nature, and humanity. It shows the technologies involved in extracting water from the carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere of planet Pandora and returning water to Earth.

The water is brought down from Pandora in a special hydrogen-free delivery capsule which is also used to bring electricity from Pandora’s surface back down to Earth. The Way of Water is discussed in this article as an example of technology and its use in extracting energy from a planet’s atmosphere and returning that energy into the system. The information provided may inspire people to use the concepts discussed here to improve our current fossil fuel version of technology so that we can minimize our impact on the planet’s ecosystems.

The plot of the Movie

Begins with a group of Navi trying to save the indigenous forest from the mining machines, but failing. Jake Sully, who has been paralyzed since going to Pandora in 2077, is taken to this forest and implanted into his avatar body by Dr. Norm Spellman, who later entrusts her with Jake’s care and teaches him how to use his body again. The Navi leader T’chala is ordered to shut down the mining machines for 100 years by the chief of their clan, Lo’ak. Lo’ak tells T’chala he will be responsible for making sure her people don’t resume their activities on Pandora until then.

The Navi leader is unhappy with the decision and leaves with a small group led by T’chala’s son Neytiri. Meanwhile, Jake in his avatar body meets the human colony along with her brother Ragan and falls in love with her, however, she soon finds out he is not human but a Navi Avatar. She then leads him on a quest to find his people to stop them from destroying Pandora’s ecosystem. Jake uses his avatar body to fight the Navi who was sent to destroy him and learns through Ragan that he is the son of his mother and Lo’ak.
