Girl Picture: “By No Means a Film Against Boys”

The Girl Picture series mostly features young women in their daily lives, the commonalities that bind us together regardless of race or gender. However, when looking at the wider perspective of our cultural message about gender and males through a feminist lens, it’s apparent that this series could be construed as “a film against boys”.  The most recent Girl Photo photo essay did not seem to have any issue with supporting this idea and as a result, has generated much debate online. The essay features a mother and daughter who live in the same house but are divided by gender.

The mom is shown posting messages on her blog that indicate she had to teach her daughter how to do laundry and cook.  The implication of the essay was at best not portrayed as harshly as its intent could be interpreted, but the dialogue it has generated has been anything but supportive of feminism for boys.

Do you know about the release date of the Girl Picture series:

This series will be released on 14 April 2022. Also, the series has an initial budget of 12 million Indian Rupees. Girl picture series is born out of poetic, visual, and sexual desire. The series is a response to the constricting conventions under which the female body is depicted from a male perspective, particularly in the art world. The series attempts to break out of these norms and portray women as independent, sexual beings in their natural state without adopting masculine conventions about dress codes and appearance that are imposed upon them for their good or for what they deem to be “modesty.”

The plot of the series revolves around a group of girls staying at a convent. The new girl who came to the convent is Sandhya. One day she hears the scream of Mother Superior, when she went inside the room, she saw that Mother Superior was in love with another woman.

What inspired the director to write the Girl Picture series?

The series is inspired by the life of a middle-aged woman I knew in my youth. She is a witch, a teacher of occultism, and writes about art, philosophy, and gender issues on her blog. I also got inspiration from the book The Monograph by John Berger which features essays on the work of female artists.

What was the motive of the director to write the Girl Picture series?

My motive behind writing this series was to depict girls that are just like boys without any dress code or gender bias. I wanted to depict them almost naked without any touch-ups or razors but still look like an angel with amazing bodies. The series also fights with the concept of ‘feminine essence’, which demands that female characters be either submissive or victimized to create a degree of sympathy for the woman who is in pain.

Who are the director’s favorite characters and why?

The favorite characters are Preeti and Shyam. They’re so innocent, but also share a very strong connection which helps them to face everyday challenges. Their love story is really beautiful and I enjoyed writing it. The whole series is my favorite, but these moments with Preeti and Shyam were so special that I couldn’t resist.

What expectations do you have from the audience of the Girl Picture series?

I hope that people will take something positive out of this series. Girl picture isn’t trying to impose any sort of sexual values or politics on you; however, if it can make women think about themselves a little more and perhaps question their perception of gender, it will have accomplished its goal.

What are the ratings of the Girl Picture series?

The ratings of Girlpicture are 8.6 on IMDB, 9.1 on Rotten Tomatoes, 4.6/5 on Common Sense Media, and 8.3/10 on Google Play Movies & TV. The series has also been downloaded 52,000 times from Google Play.
