What inspired you to create Party Down, and what was your goal for the show?

John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky created the series Party Down as a film script. The show features a group of caterers in Hollywood who are forced to work together despite their high-maintenance egos and difficulties managing their personal lives. What was the process of casting the show like?

The process of casting Party Down was unusual, but it worked out exceptionally well. Jennifer Garner developed the series for several years and traveled to see the pilot. Unfortunately, when she finally decided to sign on, we were already in production and didn’t have much time to cast.

We knew we wanted an ensemble cast that wasn’t too big, so we were instantly drawn to the idea of Jennifer Garner playing one of the leads. The rest of the leads came from their unique path: Lizzy Caplan was one of our first choices and is one of our favorite actresses. She can play a variety of characters with ease, something that’s important in a show like this.

How much improvisation was involved in making the show?

Our show is unique in that we had just four days to shoot the pilot. So we hit the entire thing in almost one continuous shot, which was incredibly helpful for our actors. Since they were shooting in sequence, they were able to get a rhythm down early on and give their most natural performances possible.

It was also helpful for us since, most of the time, we didn’t have to worry about having “extra” footage or being able to cut back if we needed it. I think it allowed us to make a better product at the end of the day.

What were some of the challenges you faced in making Party Down?

For starters, we only had one chance to make a solid first impression, and the inevitable pressure and microscope surrounded us that all new shows face. In this case, the bonus was that we were dealing with the name recognition of Jennifer Garner as well. The show had been in development for several years, and it was finally time for her to sign on.
