Leslye Headland is the creator of the upcoming American television series The Acolyte, which will air on Disney+. It is a part of the Star Wars series and is set before the main Star Wars movies’ events, near the conclusion of the High Republic era. The show is meant to be similar to The Handmaid’s Tale and is set in a Republic-like future. Headland showed her work on the series at the Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida. The Acolyte will follow Soraya, a matriarch Jedi who has taken on the title Acolyte to the young feminist movement in Coruscant.

The story is told from her perspective, but Headland said that she is intending it to be for an audience of all genders. The series will consist of ten episodes, but Headland does not intend the show to have a definite end point. Headland’s goals for the series were “to make a statement about what it means to be a woman in a man’s world,” and also to explore how women would react in these sorts of situations. “You want to know what women are really like,” she said at the Star Wars Celebration.
