HBO’s The Last of Us is a dark, emotional story about two survivors. It should come as no surprise that it’s engaging and well-written.
“The Last of us” is engaging because it dives deep into the backstory of its main characters heightening the emotional weight of their suffering in the present. This means that game players can spend more time with cherished characters. We get to go on a journey with two strangers and learn about the things they’ve been through. In Episode 2 of “The Last of us”, it seems like the series is missing out on an opportunity to flesh out Tess before her ultimate sacrifice.
What is “The Last of Us” series about?
“The Last of us” is the story of a world fallen to an unspecified pandemic, referred to as “the cordyceps brain infection”. It follows a man named Joel and a young girl named Ellie. The action takes place in an America that has been all but destroyed by brutal violence between those that have survived and the Infected who have been turned into monsters by the infection. As Joel and Ellie make their way across the country, we learn about the terrible things that happened in their past and what brought them together to survive. It’s a death-defying story of survival, one that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
What’s Worked Well?
The writing is pitch-perfect. The two lead characters are flawed in believable ways — complex, interesting, and conflicted. It’s hard not to root for both Ellie and Joel despite their frailties. The story takes a lot of cues from emotional gut punches like “The Walking Dead”, in that it’s a story about survival with limited resources, violence, desperation, and hope. As the series progresses, it only gets better and more engrossing.
What hasn’t worked as well?
The series tends to rush through huge plot points. For example, the first episode introduces us to Tess and the Fireflies. We meet Joel and Ellie’s relationship, and we learn why they aren’t on good terms. We also get a sense of their personalities and some of their backstory. However, it all happens so fast that it feels rushed, especially in comparison with the rest of the episode where story beats are drawn out for maximum emotional impact.
Future of “The Last of us”
It’s been confirmed that a second season is in the works. The writers did a great job of expanding on the original video game’s story, so it would be interesting to see where they go with a new season. It will be interesting to see what happens next when readers can expect to meet new characters, learn more about old ones, and get dragged into another thrilling tale of survival.
