The plot of the Northman Series is based on the life of Erik the Red, who is best known as the founder of Greenland. His life was filled with many ups and downs, and that is what this movie focuses on: his lowest moments.
He had a lot of trials in his early years, and that shaped him into who he became later in life. He made a lot of mistakes as a young man and had to live with the consequences. The series also shows him try to correct his mistakes, but that does not always work out for him or for those around him. What inspired you to write The Northman Series?
The series is inspired by the historical figure Erik the Red. I always had a fascination for him and wanted to create a backstory for him. I did some research on him as well as other Vikings and found that there was not a lot of information out there about them.
This made me want to create my own story about Vikings, but also make it my own with more details about their lives than I could find in history books. This is the reason why I created these stories based on Erik the Red, Fjölnir the Brotherless, and Queen Gudrún.
Why did you create Jarl’s Journey and how will it relate to The Northman Series?
I created Jarl’s Journey because I wanted a fictional story that was based on facts but also fictionalized (not taken from history). It is hard to find books about Vikings and other early inhabitants of Scandinavia, so this is one way for me to fill in the gaps about these times with my own story.
Where do you come up with your ideas for the plotlines?
My ideas for the plotlines are usually from things I’ve learned about Vikings. I watch movies about Vikings, read books about Viking life, and do a lot of research on their history. This helps me to feel like I know more about them than just what history has shown us.
What influence did you have on The Northman Series?
I had no influence on The Northman Series because it is not my story, but I watched The Northman many times while writing these stories. It was also some of the inspiration behind my own plotline that focuses on Eirik’s son one-shotly named “Erik”.

How long does it usually take you to write a book from start to finish?
I usually spend about six months writing a book. I like to get inspired before I actually write the story by doing a lot of research. This takes a few months and then when I feel that I have the inspiration I need, then I will sit down and write it out in a rough draft fashion.
That takes me another month or two and then when it is ready, then I will give it to my editor and she will edit it for me. This usually takes another month or two while she goes over it line by line to make sure that everything is correct, punctuation is right, there are no errors, etc.
