The Resident is an American comedy-drama television show following the lives of a group of wealthy people living in Manhattan’s most expensive and exclusive building. The season kicks off with a new intern being tasked to work in the White House, and what awaits her is not what she expected. She soon learns that there’s no such thing as just following the rules when you’re working for the President of the United States, especially one who doesn’t really follow them himself.

RELEASE DATE:

The release date for RESIDENT season 5 is September 21, 2021, on Tuesday.

PRODUCTION:

Production on the fifth season of RESIDENT began in early 2020 and wrapped up in late June. ABC has confirmed it will be twelve episodes long, with an extra hour-long finale. The series is produced by Shankman Productions and was created by Andy Cohen, who also serves as executive producer alongside Jennifer Lawrence.

THE PLOT:

The fifth season of RESIDENT will focus on the Vice President, Tom James (played by Mike Kelly), who is running for president. James was elected as Vice President after filling in when former VP candidate Vanessa Diaz’s plane crashed while campaigning during a storm, and she died from her injuries sustained in the accident.

The Resident Season five follows the lives of three new residents at a retirement home. The series will focus on how they adapt to their new surroundings, as well as some previous residents and staff who have come back for one last visit.

There are two main plots this season – one focusing on a group of residents who have decided to blow up the retirement home, and another focused on three new arrivals who don’t know anything about their surroundings. There will also be smaller storylines involving some other returning cast members.

THE STARRING CAST:

There are seven returning cast members, including the three new arrivals who all serve as doctors for the retirement home;

  • Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) and
  • Neil Melendez (Ben Shenkman).

  • James Woods as Edward Alcott.

As for the new arrivals, they are described by Moore: “They have other agendas that we’re going to find out about overtime.”

RATINGS:

The Resident Season One averages 74 percent on Metacritic and 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Resident Season One premiered to ratings of over eight million viewers, and the premiere garnered a total audience of 11.62 million (P18-49). It was ABC’s most-watched show in the 18-49 demographic since May 2017, when American Idol aired its finale.

EXPECTATIONS:

The ratings, reviews, and anticipation for the upcoming season are high. “This show is not going to be like last year’s,” Moore said of Season Four. “I think it’ll live up to people’s expectations.” As for the surprising turn of events with Leah, “I saw that coming,” Moore said.
