It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Three Thousand Years of Longing tells the story of a world in which three empires are constantly at war with each other. Magic and technology have merged to create a world that is both beautiful and deadly. The three heroes of the story are caught in the crossfire of a world not their own and will have to overcome their personal struggles to help save their new home.

The game takes place in a fantasy world but is not your typical Tolkien-esque setting. While it is rich with magic, it is also riddled with technology left by a long-extinct race called the Beyonders. The Beyonders were well advanced in both magic and science leading to an interesting blend of the two in their technology. The main example is that modern guns tend to function by shooting out bullets that are magical constructs (that are still referred to as bullets). The result is a setting that has kept its medieval feel while adding modern-era weaponry and vehicles.

What inspired the director to write the Three Thousand Years of Longing series?

The series is inspired by my life growing up in a small town in the UK (which is actually a Welsh-speaking town). To be honest, I moved back to Wales for school and, after coming home, I wanted to find out more about the history of people and places in Wales. Over time I started writing this story for myself and eventually others. Now it’s become something that I wish to share with the world.

What was the process for writing the series – did directors plan it all out beforehand?

I know this might sound like a cliché but it was just a case of writing the story and characters and then finding actors to fit. That being said, the beginning of the project started when I wrote the screenplay for Susan, my short fantasy film. The Short was filmed and we had an amazing cast and crew come together for it. As a director, when you start to work with talented actors you’re confidence grows. It’s very easy to get someone into character because you know they are great at what they do.

Why do directors think readers have responded so positively to the series?

I’d like to think it’s because the stories are original and they are told in a way you don’t usually get in fantasy. For example, rather than listing a bunch of names any time you want to discuss characters’ lineage we included a genealogical tree to help readers keep track of who is who.

One of the reasons I love fantasy is that there’s a certain sense of mythos and magic that comes with it, this is something we’ve tried to capture in the series by telling the story through different perspectives (Book 1 – The Return of The King is from Kamui’s perspective; Book 2 – The New Prophecy from Honeysuckle’s perspective & 3 – Dragonheart from Veluria’s perspective)
