The White Noise series of modern pieces has become one of the most highly regarded and praised works in contemporary chamber music. The first work, Atepid, was premiered at the Dartington International Summer School as part of a new concert series for young composers. Its success propelled White Noise to become an international sensation, with performances around the world and recordings on major labels. Now White Noise has moved on to much bigger venues with In The City, a 150-second standing ovation for the audience at London’s Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

The audience was a mix of new audiences who had never heard of White Noise, and older audiences who were familiar with the series. There was an air of anticipation in the Festival Hall as people took their seats, but not nervousness. People wanted to hear the work, and they wanted to be a part of it. Like any other concert piece, they waited for the conductor to put down his baton and begin.

Do you know about the release date of the White Noise series:

This series will be released on 31 August 2022. Also, the series has three parts and the third part will be performed by the medieval ensemble Red Priest. The conductor raised his baton and In The City began with a quiet introduction, just barely audible above the rustle of the audience. Then, as the audience settled in their seats, White Noise burst out in full force.  The music was loud and raucous, but it was not angry or harsh. It was alive with energy and vitality as it came from twenty-three musicians on stage. As the composer notes: “Each second contains 150 seconds of sound.”

Here is the plot of the White Noise series discussed:

The plot of the music is evident in the title of the piece; this is a concerto for all the instruments and singers, but there are also solos and duets. As one performer at a time takes the spotlight, their section of instruments joins them in a rousing cacophony.  The performers were dressed just like any other orchestra. The only difference was that they had headphones on, which they used to hear each other when they weren’t playing on stage. To achieve such perfect synchronicity, these performers had to play at least 1,000 times before White Noise was even conceived.
