Shrek has had an eventful life, which is why it is understandable that film-goers and audiences are not ready to give up on this character yet. With “Shrek 5” set to be released on December 21, 2022, take a look at what we know so far about the fifth film in this franchise. The announcement of a fifth Shrek movie came as the world was still processing Shrek 4’s very convincing death scene. But with reanimation being everything these days, “Shrek 5” is happening, with a release date of May 2020. Will Shrek find it in him to love Fiona again? How will the children cope with such a long separation? And most importantly, will the fifth Shrek be as good as its predecessors?

Who is Shrek?

The ogre we all know and love is a green-skinned little fella called Artie. The character was created by William Steig, who published a book under the same name. The book has been translated into 28 languages and has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide over the years. The character was also made into an animated film back in 2001, which spawned a franchise of four films (with plans for 4 more). Shrek is voiced by Mike Myers in these films and was later replaced by Eddie Murphy (who played Donkey).

What is “Shrek 5” about?

According to the official website, “Shrek 5” will be about “family”. However, given that this is a story about an ogre and a princess, the story might just not be as family-oriented as we hope it will be. Maybe Mike Myers (the voice behind Shrek) can still save the day, even though he has retired from voice acting after recording his lines for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.

Is Eddie Murphy coming back?

In a word – no! While it would have been fun to see Eddie Murphy resurrect Donkey in his signature high-pitched mannerism, it seems like the filmmakers have gone in another direction. The official website reveals that Cameron Diaz will be playing Fiona in the new film.

Who else is returning?

Director Mike Mitchell, who helmed “Shrek 2” and “Shrek – The Third”, is returning to direct “Shrek 5”. Co-director of the first two films, Andrew Adamson, will executive produce. In addition to this, the entire cast from the first four films is expected to return for a fifth outing (excluding Mike Myers). This means that Eddie Murphy will be able to see his characters through from beginning to end.

Is a sixth Shrek movie possible?

It seems like Universal Studios have plans to make six more films in this franchise – or at least four more films with another two serving as spinoffs/prequels/etc. This means that fans will have to wait a long time before they get to see a Shrek movie, given that they usually come out once every 5 years.

What is going on with the release date?

“Shrek 5” was then expected to come out in May 2020. However, the release date has been pushed back, this time to 20 May 2023. This is a long wait for fans of the franchise and new movie-goers alike. Consider that the first Shrek was released in 2001 (which makes it just 16 years old), and we might just be too old for Shrek by the time its fifth installment comes out. Hopefully, this will not be the case!

In the Conclusion

Despite the long wait, we are excited to see “Shrek 5”. The franchise has had a good run, and it is not surprising that Universal Studios would want to squeeze out more films. Shrek’s life has been eventful so far, and part of us wishes that this film will be about the character’s declining years – hopefully with many pearls of wisdom from the old green ogre.
