What inspired the director to write “Are You There God It’s Me”?

The film is inspired by a novel of the same name. In that book, Margaret is a 12-year-old girl who struggles with teenage issues and is prayer-shy—often making her feel like she’s not good enough for God or anyone else. Throughout the movie, Margaret has to deal with issues that teenagers often face. She also struggles with her religious feelings and her relationship with her parents and peers.

Who are the director’s favorite characters and why?

The favorite director of “Are You There God It’s Me” is Suzanne Bier. Her favorite characters are Barbara Simon and Margaret. This is because Barbara is a mother who has lost her real husband, while Margaret is the daughter of this marriage. Also, Suzanne loves the way that these characters are depicted in the book and how they are shown in the movie.

What do the reviewers think of  “Are You There God It’s Me”?

The reviews are overall positive. The book was written by Judy Blume, who is a bestselling author but also an avid critic of her works. In her opinion, she feels that the story is “just as annoying as it always was” and is full of the same old-fashioned sexist writing that readers have seen in her other books for thirty years. Blume has claimed she’s never been approached to publish a movie based on her work and has even threatened to sue should one be made.
