The third season of the critically renowned series, Godfather of Harlem, is to premiere early next year sometime on January 15 and Epix has also released the official trailer for the new season. Amongst all the forces and rising tensions seen in the trailer, one thing is all clear– Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) still rules Harlem, and he is not letting go anytime soon. The trailer also shows the more personal side of the father to both Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams) and his son, revealed to be named Darnell.

Another thing to note is how much historical context there will be for the season as drug trafficking was in its infancy and organized crime was not so much a threat during that time period. Here’s hoping that with all the attention and money spent on this show, it gets another season or two to continue telling the story of one of the most influential people ever in Harlem.

What inspired the director to write Godfather of Harlem Season 3?

The series is inspired by the life of Bumpy Johnson, who during his long career was one of the most powerful gangsters in Harlem. He was a boxer, bootlegger and later a drug kingpin. The story of a young and poor African-American who studied in the law school and, thanks to his extraordinary intelligence, managed to receive a law degree. Later he decided to use his knowledge and skills in a completely different area – organized crime. His talent for negotiation allowed him to quickly climb the ladder from drug seller to mafia boss. The series also contains stories about his family, especially his son Darnell (played by Erik LaRay Harvey), whom he trained as his successor.

Who are the directors favorite characters and why?

My favorite character is Chalky White, because every time the character has been played by Michael Kenneth Williams it’s always been extraordinary. The director also likes the character that is played by Vincent D’Onofrio, because he’s always been very authentic and very natural.
