What inspired you to write the Kraven the Hunter series?

The series is inspired by the animal hunter from The Amazing Spider-Man and The Spectacular Spider-Man. Kraven is a highly experienced hunter and a master tactician. He is also a master of camouflage and has been known to wear trophies that resemble his victims’ faces as masks.

His most prized possession is his collection of shrunken human heads, which he keeps in a bag he wears around his shoulder. Kraven keeps a constant watch on Spider-man through his telescope, waiting for him to slip up so he can defeat him at last. In fact, Kraven’s code name was Hunter.

What is your favorite part of writing this series?

My favorite part of writing this series is the characters. Though I’ll admit that I’ve made Kraven a bit over the top, it was a fight that had to be fought in order to write him properly. That and the fact that Jameson has been through enough in his life before he goes up against Kraven, makes him an interesting character to write.

Are there any challenges you’ve faced while writing this series that you didn’t expect?

The main challenge I’ve faced while writing the series is keeping it fresh. The story only moves forward when Jameson and Kraven meet, so I have to make things entertaining and informative until they finally meet. While that can easily be done with a couple of witty comments, I like writing fight scenes better than witty comments.

What made you choose the genre for this series?

The main character of this series is an animal hunter / serial killer, so that alone makes it a horror genre of some sort or another (depending on how you look at it). Being set in NYC also gave me the opportunity to explore new locations.

What do you hope readers will take away from reading your books?

I hope that readers can enjoy the series without taking away anything too specific from it. The main point of the story is to entertain, and I hope that it does that. The other point of this series is for people to see how deeply Jameson has been affected by his father.

I try to take a break in between books, but sometimes time slips by before I know it and I have another book on my hands. Most of my work is done at night after everyone else has gone to bed in order to avoid distractions while writing.

Do you have any other projects in the works that you can share with us?

I am always working on new Kraven stories in the background. There are a total of 8 Kraven stories in total. The first book, and a 4 part series that is currently being written. I want to make sure the entire series can be read in order before releasing any books individually.

I’ve taken my time with this second book, and I think it’s reflected in the quality of writing so far. I’ve learned a lot by reading multiple books on writing methods and theories, as well as editing my own work for entertainment value instead of just for spelling and grammar mistakes.
